Moving in Reno During Winter: Snow, Ice, and Smart Packing
Snow and cardboard do not mix. Here is how to keep a winter move in Northern Nevada on track.
01Watch the forecast and the passes
Storms can close Mount Rose Highway and bring chain controls on I-80. If you are moving to or from Tahoe, build a backup day into your plan.
02Protect the floors
Snowmelt and gravel get tracked in fast. Floor protection and a staging area near the door save a lot of cleanup.
03Why totes matter more in winter
Wet cardboard loses its strength and can collapse in a stack. Plastic totes shrug off snow and slush, and lids keep contents dry between the door and the truck.
04Shorter days
Winter daylight ends early. Start loading in the morning and keep a flashlight handy for the last trips.
