How Many Moving Totes Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Guide

01Count rooms, not square feet

Square footage is a poor predictor of how much you pack. Two homes of the same size can differ enormously depending on kitchen contents, closet depth, books, and how long the household has lived there. A better method is to walk each room and count what has to leave in a container.

Totes rent in increments of ten, so your goal is not a perfect number. It is landing on the right tier: ten, twenty, thirty, forty, and up.

02Rough starting points by home size

These ranges reflect typical households with a normal amount of accumulation:

• Dorm room or single bedroom: about 10 totes
• Studio or small one-bedroom apartment: about 20 totes
• One-bedroom with a full kitchen: 20 to 30 totes
• Two-bedroom home or apartment: 30 to 40 totes
• Three-bedroom home: 40 to 60 totes
• Larger home, or a home plus garage and storage: 60 to 100 totes
• Office, classroom, or facility move: 50 totes and up, depending on desks and files

03The rooms that surprise people

Kitchens are almost always the highest per-square-foot packing load in a home. Between dishes, glassware, small appliances, pantry goods, and the drawer nobody has opened in a year, a full kitchen commonly fills eight to twelve totes on its own.

Books are the second surprise. They are heavy and dense, so you will fill more containers than you expect while keeping each one at a weight you can actually carry. Garages are the third: tools, fasteners, camping gear, and sports equipment all pack well into rigid totes but consume them quickly.

04What does not go in a tote

You do not need totes for furniture, mattresses, framed art, televisions, or anything long and awkward like skis and floor lamps. Those move on dollies and with protective equipment instead, which is why we rent dollies, hand trucks, straps, blankets, mattress bags, and protection alongside the totes.

Leaving those items out of your count is the most common reason an estimate comes in too high.

05A simple way to land on your number

Walk the home with your phone and note a tote count per room. Add the rooms together, then add roughly twenty percent for the things you always find late: the hall closet, the pantry back row, the laundry shelf, the bathroom cabinet.

Round up to the next increment of ten. Having a few empty totes on moving day costs you nothing in effort; running short at nine at night costs you the whole evening.
