How to Pack Moving Totes Properly: Weight, Order, and Labels
A tote packed well carries easier, stacks safer, and unpacks faster. Most of that comes down to three habits.
01Heavy low, light high, inside every tote
Load dense items on the bottom and lighter items on top. This keeps the center of gravity low so the tote does not fight you while you carry it, and it protects the soft items from being crushed.
Apply the same rule to the stack. Heavy totes belong on the floor and in the lower rows of the truck; light totes go on top. A heavy tote resting on a light one is how lids bow and stacks tip.
02Fill completely, but keep the weight carryable
Totes perform best when they are full, because full totes hold their shape under load and do not let contents shift. But full does not mean maxed out by weight. With books, tools, canned goods, or dishware you will reach a sensible carrying weight long before you run out of space.
The practical fix is mixing: start a tote with heavy items, then top it off with linens, towels, or clothing. You get a full, stable tote that one person can still lift comfortably.
03Fragile items need a buffer, not luck
Rigid walls protect against outside impact, but they do nothing about items knocking into each other inside. Wrap glassware and ceramics individually in packing paper, stand plates on edge rather than flat, and pad the gaps so nothing can travel.
Use a soft layer on the bottom and one across the top before closing the lid. If a tote rattles when you tilt it, add padding before it goes on the truck.
04Pack by room, and by when you will need it
Keep each tote to one room so unloading is a delivery route instead of a sorting project. Then add a second dimension: priority. First-night items, kitchen basics, bedding, chargers, toiletries, and tools for reassembling furniture should ride in clearly marked totes loaded last so they come off first.
Keep medications, documents, keys, and valuables with you rather than in the load.
05Label both ends
Write the room and a short contents note, and mark two sides so a stacked tote can be read without moving it. Reusable labels save you from adhesive residue and let the tote go straight back into service.
Add a priority mark for the first-night group. On a long moving day that one symbol is the difference between finding your coffee maker in a minute and searching for twenty.
